The 5th Grassroots Radio Conference will take place in Madison, WI at WORT-FM, July 20-23, 2000.
I have never been to a GRC, although I've meant to go for years. Madison is close to Champaign, so I hope to drag myself up this time around.

Free Radio Berkeley has planned a Micropower Broadcasting Council of War (for today... which is when I found out) to figure out how to jam and shut down the National Association of Broadcaster's Radio Convention, set for Sept. 20 - 23, 2000 in San Francisco.

The same day that I found out that Sen. Fitzgerald signed on as a cosponsor to S.2068 I received a written response to my letter I sent him urging him to support LPFM. He says nothing substantial, giving no hint that his intention was to cosponsor th bill that aims to kill LPFM. Click here to see the letter Sen. Fitzgerald sent me.
I immediately sent Sen. Fitzgerald an e-mail asking for an explanation as to why he supports killing LPFM. I haven't heard back yet.

According to the U.S. Senate website Illinois' own Sen. Peter Fitzgerald (r) has signed on as a co-sponsor to the Radio Broadcasting Preservation Act of 2000 (S. 2068), which intends to kill low power broadcasting before it starts. The total number of sponsors is now up to 31, just 20 fewer than needed to pass this legislation, which matches similar legislation passed by the House in April.

The Nation magazine has an interesting article on the Pacifica network and its current situation and crises. This article nicely places the events of the past two years in a conherent context and timeline, and attempts to balance the views of both sides (Pacifica Board/Management vs. Free Pacifica/KPFAers). The author, a former NPR editorial director, is clearly sympathetic to the idea of increasing national programming and making program modifications to increase audience, but also seems sincere in his left-wing sympathies and recognition that Pacifica should not become another NPR. As a former radio programmer (4 yrs. as chair of WEFT's Programming Chair) I am all too aware of some of the complexities and tensions pointed out in the article.

I need to send out mad props to fellow WEFT airshifter Jason Pitzl ("Mood Ring" 2-5am Friday), author of his own blog PitzlPrime. Jason works at bringing artists in the greater Champaign-Urbana area together with his C/U Art project.

The web log is finally working again! My weblog service blogger.com wasn't playing nice with my U of I staff account, which is why updates didn't happen for all of April. Now things are cool again, and I'm planning a bit of a redesign... stay tuned.
