  • Following up on the article the Nation published last month on the Pacifica situation, they have now published a few of the many letters they have received on that article.
Of the letters included, I find the one from Nicole Sawaya, the fired station manger from KPFA, to be the most enlightening, followed perhaps by the letter from Martin Spinelli, a radio prof. at Brooklyn College, who rightly points out the problem with Pacifica relying on Arbitron ratings.

  • Once again, John Anderson from free/pirate radio at About.com has a good story up, this time regarding Napoleon Williams. Napoleon is on the lam after being railroaded on bullshit "felony eavesdropping" charge in Decatur, but we shouldn't forget him.

  • The Springfield (IL) Journal-Register covered last night's meeting of the Springfield Media Activist Coalition (MAC), where I spoke about community radio and WEFT. They're trying to organize to put a community radio station on the air in Springfield. Last night's meeting was pretty well attended and attracted some new faces interested in the idea. I got peppered with lots of really good questions after the talk, indicating to me that folks are serious about getting a station.

  • Some folks in Springfield, IL, called the Media Action Coalition, are organizing to put a community radio station on the air in that city. I'll be speaking with them about community radio and my experiences with WEFT at a public meeting on Wed. June 28 from 7-9:00 pm held at the Springfield Public Library, 324 S. 7th in Springfield, in the Carnegie Room South. The purpose of this meeting is to get people oriented to and excited about community radio by talking about some of the things people can and are doing with community radio, as well as how community radio stations can be true alternative media by virtue of how they are organized and run. If you live in the greater Springfield, IL area --an area dearly in need of a community radio station--please consider coming out for this meeting.

  • The University of Michigan's student/communtity radio station has released a statement saying that they are dropping Pacifica Network News in order "to protest what we believe to be unfair labor practices, disregard for the founding principles of Pacifica."

  • I just received a reply letter from Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin on LPFM. Since he signed onto the "dear colleague" letter urging his fellow senators to support LPFM, it isn't surprising that his letter also voices this support. Click here to read the letter.

  • Wired News reports that NewsWatch.org, one of the better media watchdog sites, has called it quits due to a lack of funding.
It amazes and saddens me that $1 million in seed funding is only enough to run a web site of this sort for 2 years. By comparison, a community station like WEFT spends that much in about 8-10 years, and larger stations, like KBOO in Portland go through $2M in a about 3.
And I thought the Internet was supposed to make things like this cheaper and easier than possible with "old media."
