  • The Philadelphia Indepdendent Media Center and Free Speech TV are both running independent coverage of the Republican Convention in Philadelphia. The IMC has a radio broadcast, and FSTV has a live TV broacast on the Dish network and via RealVideo. Every morning the Pacifica radio program Democracy Now will be simulcast on FSTV. Expect to get an uncensored view of the protests and dissenters surrounding the RNC.
You can hear the audio portion of Democracy Now on WEFT on the web at 4:00pm CDT

  • I just got back from the Grassroots Radio Conference 5 hosted by WORT in Madison, WI. It was very fun and productive, and I got to meet a lot of interesting people in community radio and low-power/pirate radio, including Jon Anderson over at About.com, Pete Tri Dish from Mutiny Radio and the Prometheus Project, and Christopher Maxwell from Radio Free Richmond (VA). I taped some interviews that I'll post for air and listening on-line in the next couple of weeks, and try to post some reflections and comments on the conference.
Overall I'd say it was a valuable experience, especially for how it helps forge an alliance between all types of community and grassroots broadcasters, whether from big cities, small towns, licensed or unlicensed. I'm already looking forward to GRC6.

  • I got another letter from Sen. Peter Fitzgerald regarding low-power FM. As I noted before (see entry for 5/27 below), I was befuddled to find out that he signed on to support the Senate bill to kill LPFM after sending me a non-committal letter that indicated no such thing. So I sent an e-mail to the senator asking why he signed on, and asking him to reconsider. The senator only responds by snail mail, so he responded with the exact same letter!. And still, it gives background on lpfm, but says nothing about the Senator's position on the issue!
Compare for yourself: here's the letter Sen. Fitzgerald sent in May, and here's the letter he sent a few days ago..
Sure looks like somebody in the Senator's office is doing her/his job and reading the mail thoroughly...

  • Mediachannel.org has an interesting commentary article on how Public Television (PBS) is losing sight of its mission, and losing out in many ways to growing grassroots and independent media. The author is especially critical of public TV's insularity, and how it shuns involvement by independent producers and community groups alike.

  • The New York Times features an article today reporting that religious groups--especially right-wing and fundamentalist ones--are one of the major applicants for Low-Power FM licenses, comprising around 50%. Of course, the conflict that arises is that these same groups tend to be aligned with Republicans, who are currently leading the way in limiting or killing LPFM, since they are securely in the pocket of the NAB. The question is, then: which wins, the (supposed) moral leaders, or the big moneybags? I don't think the answer is too hard to figure out.
