Dear Free Speech Radio News sustainer, donor or friend, This is our monthly communique about what's happening with the strike against Pacifica Network News and the strikers' newscast, Free Speech Radio News. We have some interesting news to report: Pacifica Network News has been cancelled as of tomorrow, Feb. 15. The reason given by Pacifica management is financial -- the network is some $5 million in the hole and cuts have to be made. However, it's no secret that PNN has long been grossly inadequate as a Pacifica program, and has been aired on only a handful of the stations affiliated with Pacifica. New Pacifica management has reached out to Free Speech Radio News in several ways. We're now uploaded onto Pacifica's "KU" satellite system each day, which makes it easier for Pacifica stations and affiliates to receive our program. FSRN was used heavily during New York station WBAI's fund drive this month and will now be regularly aired on that station. Berkeley's KPFA has long supported the program too, as has Pacifica affiliate WMNF in Tampa. New station managers at the other Pacifica stations (WPFW in Washington, KPFT in Houston and KPFK in Los Angeles) say they support the program. We are very pleased by these developments and hope you are too. However, much of this support within Pacifica does not come with any funding. FSRN is still very much "own its own" with regard to paying for reporting, phone bills, production, etc. We produce this quality daily news show on a shoe string, but we are still relying on you to help keep us going. So we need your donations now as much as ever. For those of you receiving this who are sustainers, please consider this your REMINDER TO SEND IN YOUR PLEDGE. Please make checks out to, and mail to: Pacifica Reporters Against Censorship, c/o Kevin Brower, 2210 Curtis Street, Apt. A, Berkeley, CA 94702. As always, thank you for your continuing support. In solidarity, The PNN strikers
