Last Fall I saw a crazy retro video game console advertised on QVC and somehow got sucked in. I'm not a big video game player -- I'd say my peak gaming years were around 1982 - 89 on my Atari 2600, TI-99 and Commodore 64. After that I dabbled with some DOS PC games on my IBM PS/2-286 and the used Nintendo (first generation) my roommate and I had in college, but it pretty much fell off after 1993. So, suffice it to say that I like simpler 2-D games rather than the massive 3-D mostrosities that rule the roost these days. I want games that you can learn to play in minutes and not have to invest hours in order to enjoy. Thus this console that advertised over 64 retro games like Galaxian immediately appealed to me, as did the $29.95 price. These things were selling like hotcakes on QVC (doesn't everything) and I thought that $30 couldn't be too much of a risk.
My Power Joy, as it's called, arrived several weeks later. It looks like two super cheap-ass plastic game controllers, wired together, with a very cheap plastic game cartridge that looks like an Atari or ColecoVision reject. All the hardware is crammed into the main joystick, which is just a bit bigger than a typical modern game controller, with a cartridge slot on the bottom, a game pad and and a joystick, and a light sensor on the front. Believe it or not, the damn thing runs on batteries.
From the hard-sell on QVC I was expecting the games to be the arcade favorites of the 1980s, and that's partially true. What they actually turned out to be are what look like the Nintendo ports of arcade favorites. That's right, I'm convinced that the Power Joy is actually an 8-bit Nintendo with 64 games crammed into a plastic joystick. What's funniest about these 64 games is that many of them appear to be the same game, just with different names and different looking main characters. For instance, there's 3 or 4 different versions of Dig Dug, but with names like "Kittie." And most of the games have pretty bad Engrish or are just labeled in Chinese... with no directions enclosed. What do you want for 30 bucks?
But what really matters is game play, right? Well, it pretty much delivers there, if you like the game play of an old Nintendo (and I do). The only limiting factor is the fussyness of the cheap-ass plastic joysticks. Too bad you can't connect new ones, since the damn console is actually the controller.
You can order you're own Power Joy from their UK website, but you'll pay $49.95 US, and have to get it shipped. Too much, I'd say. $30 is my limit.
Wait! A quick Google search confirms my suspicions that the Power Joy is actually an NES rip-off. The Famiclone website documents the phenomena of Nintendo Family Computer (Famicon -- as it was known in Japan and Asia) clones, and confirms the Power Joy as one of them.
After starting to write this I realized that some pictures and more game info would be interesting, but I want to hit publish already.

My sister got me one of these for Christmas and I think it's great! I have an Atari 7800, N64, gamecube, xbox and more and I think that the sheer value for $30 is fantastic. Sure, the cord between the controllers could be longer, more of your arcade favorites could be here (and less duplicates), the sound could be (a lot) better, but the clear picture and decent control (i.e.:play 4 way arcade games with the joystick as if it was a 4 way stick (N S E W), the diagonals will mess you up or use the d-pad) with excellent arcade gameplay on some of the better games here, Space Invaders (Space E.T.), Galaga, Joust, GALAXIANS (!!!), Millipede, Xevious and probably even more that I haven't found yet make this an absolute steal at $30. Some of these ports are the absolute best I've seen outside of m.a.m.e., try some of the games I mentioned and see what you think. Somehow, even with that glowing review, I agree that I wouldn't shell out the $55 to get it direct, but in my book it's the best $30 present I've gotten in years.

Posted by: chris on January 1, 2003 11:39 AMhey, geuss what! there is the new power joy 2. this is almost exactly like power joy 1 exept it has 94 games,no games that are exactly like others exept they have different names and stuff(like a warpman clone that you play as pikachu)(sorry there is one clone but its not a clone of a game thats not already there,its a super mario clone that has pandas insted of plumbers) it can run on batteries or electristy,it is NOT a cheap NES clone. you wont find this at famiclone.com or whatever,all of the non-transilated games are now transilated and theres no bad english(but there are now a hole bunch more new japanese ones). just one problem,itd still made ou of the cheapest plastick in the world.

I have not even played it and learned that thee joystick on the one I purchased is completeley jammed and does not allow movement to the right. I thought that was my biggest challenge until I called the Free UK number to get a replacment. They were closed! Called the next day 10 times, Buisy line (ever heard of call--waiting) Eventually the business day closed in the UK and now I have to try again on Monday to get this replaced. QVC will refund my money but is out of stock. My kids are wondering why I won't let them play with there Xmas gift....

the easyest way to get a new one is to go to power-joy.com (note if you end up at a place called 661 yes or somthin like that,go to it by searching for power joy at google).

I sent it back and ordered one on the internent now it has been freezing up on most of the games and he has only had it a week. Can't seem to get any response from the company who makes it. My grandson really enjoyed it while it lasted only a short time.

oh, theres a new thig called power joy voyager. Its a gameboy/nes COMBO. If its not hyooked to the TV you can play hand held block games. then hook it up to the TV and its like a power joy 2, but with about 3 more games. Its the best PJ system EVER!!, and the isnt as cheap, but still pretty cheap.

I just ordered the power joy 2 for my boyfriend of 21 years. He is a big gamer and spends hours in front of the TV playing. I figured he would like this, but now after reading all the bad reviews Im almost scared to give it to him. I hope he likes it and I hope I dont get screwed by giving this as a gift. PJ 3 is supposed to be more stable than 2 and more durable
It also features a little LCD screen that has its own games, pointless to me but whatever.
PJ3 will also feature new expansion packs like PJ1 did, though they will only fit 3.
