Geek Out at the Pocket

Geek Out at the Pocket Calculator Show, that also has features on the golden age (1970s & 80s) of digital watches, walkmen and boomboxes (via boingboing). The page is a companion to an actual shortwave radio program on WBCQ, and I might tune in tonight if I'm around my shortwave.

Buying a house has made

Buying a house has made me all domestic and decorating and shit. Actually, I've been kinda into design and decorating since about 4 years into having my own apartment, but apartments can be limited in design options. Especially since during the last 3 years of living alone I was rarely home much to begin with.

We're waiting for two floors to be put in to get the house together -- cause that means the contents of those rooms have to reside elsewhere in the interim. But since we've got a 40s vintage brink ranch we're playing with the "mid-century modern" thing, starting with some "vintage" furniture we picked up at a new local furniture store called the Furniture Lounge, which is all used mid-century stuff.

Somehow I stumbled upon a site called Digsmagazine that I've come to really enjoy, calling itself "a home + living guide for the post-college, pre-parenthood, quasi-adult generation." At 31 I'm not sure I totally qualify, though I'm definitely post-college (9 years) and pre-parenthood (not planning on it), and I guess there are those that would argue that I don't even rank as "quasi-adult." But the decorating tips are pretty cool and practical. I'm a lurker on their message boards -- I just haven't gotten around to joining in -- I don't do too many message boards 'cause I get enough conversation in real life meatspace. I don't have anything against Internet conversing, there's just so much I can do in any given day, I guess.

I also happened on the site called Get Crafty, which has lots of DIY decor ideas -- you can see the thread, no?

Pitchfork has a good little

Pitchfork has a good little overview of major filesharing systems to use after the death of AudioGalaxy ( I never used audiogalaxy myself -- don't remember why, not, but it seemed like there was something onerous about it). It's written from a music geek's perspective, rather than a tech geek's perspective, so the author is more concerned with variety of content available rather than pure tech, which is a nice opinion to have. Seems like I might want to try Soulseek -- which I'd never heard of -- to search out some electronica and underground hip hop.

I want to start using

I want to start using this blog more (famous last blogging words). So far I've typically only blogged when I have this need to express something going on in my life, which is fine. But I'm going to start using this blog more as my annotated bookmarks and comments on things that I find. I'll continue to also post more 'personal' shit, too, but most posts will be links to stuff that don't quite fit into the main mediageek blog and diy blog. Enjoy.

To that end, Wired News has an article on digital photomontage. Since I'm not a very skilled artist when it comes to drawing or painting, I've always been drawn to collage (visual, auditory, video) and find it to be a powerful method. The article features a cool site called Cut & Paste, a History of Photomontage.

We moved 99% of stuff

We moved 99% of stuff into the new house today. It's good that I only move every 3 years or so, because every time I need to do it I have forgotten how miserable the last time was. This time around we got a lot of help from family and friends which made it a 4 - 5 hour affair rather than 10, but I was still exhausted by 5 PM. Now we have to unpack.

Last week we painted four rooms out of six with some nice colors and found out that the hardwood floor revealed from underneath nasty carpet is repairable and not a bad DIY job. We're having pros do new vinyl flooring for the kitchen and wood laminate for my office (which has ugly, scuffed-up vinyl now).

We've been taking pictures as we go along, so I hoping to develop the film, scan the pics, and make some pages of the progress.... I think an Ikea trip may be happening this week or next.
