Micropower and Community Radio The following articles were written by RFC host Paul Riismandel for WEFT's program guide The WEFT Revue.
Series #1: Radio With a Conscience This series was written to introduce readers to the growing micropower radio movement and the issues it raises. I think it's important for community radio listeners to understand the connection between community and micropower radio, as well as see that the lack of community radio in many communities is what motivates microbroadcasters.
Series #2: What Is WEFT? This series is being written in order to bring some clarity to the idea of "community radio," especially as it relates to the station I volunteer at, WEFT. I decided to write this series because I realized that this simple term has a lot of baggage attached to it, and means a lot to a lot of people. In talking to listners to WEFT many of them did not really have a good idea of what exactly it meant to say that "WEFT is community radio." By exploring some of the basics and similarities between many different conceptions of community radio, we can begin to get a handle on the topic, and perhaps aspire to improve this medium. |
